As the summer rolls by us, and fall turns our way it’s time now to pick up a couple of fun party shoes for the upcoming holiday season.

Fashion Icon: At 61, Model Naomi Sims dies

Modeling was her destiny, fame was her bookmark, and affliction was her way out.  Model, Naomi Sims was born to a very strict Catholic family in Oxford, Mississippi, on March 30, 1948.  Growing up in the late fifties Sims had two challenges she had to overcome.  The first being African American, and the second was being utterly tall.  

 

 

Once Sims, realized fashion was what she wanted to pursue, she enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.  In the late 60’s and 70’s, she become one of the first African-American models to walk in major fashion shows, you could see her face in numerous magazines spreads, and could recognize her face countless fashion magazines.  She was the first African-American model to grace the cover of Ladies Home Journal, Time, Cosmopolitan, McCall’s, Life, and many others.

 

 

After her successful modeling career she began her own line of wigs.  Her collection was for the textured, and relaxed black womans’ hair.

 

 

Sims fought for her life, until she could not fight anymore.  Sims died August 1, 2009 from Breast Cancer.
