Breaking News: Fashion Designer Oscar de la Renta dies at 82
Iconic designer Oscar de la Renta dies in his home in Kent, Conn. at age 82.
De la Renta was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, but the exact cause of death has not been released by family members at this time.
At the age of 18, he uprooted from his home in Dominican Republic and moved to Spain to study painting. It was there were he became enthralled with fashion and began sketching designs for Spanish fashion houses. His career heighten when he landed an apprenticeship with Cristobal Balenciaga, and later designed for Lanvin.
Looking to expand his name internationally, de la Renta moved to New York in the 60s to design ready-to-wear looks for Elizabeth Arden. De la Renta launched his own label in 1965 and became one of the most sought out couture designers for Jacqueline Kennedy. Over the past 40 years he has designed an array of elegant inaugural ball gowns for first ladies, including Hilary Clinton, Nancy Reagan, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama. Not only did he dazzle first ladies with flawless dresses, he has dressed celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gloria Estefan and Amy Adams in gorgeous red carpet pieces for award shows like the Oscars and Grammys.
Throughout his career he was known for designing timeless gowns that created moments in fashion history, but most recently he designed a glamourous ivory wedding gown for George Clooney’s wife, Amal Alamuddin.
The fashion world will truly miss the legendary designer.
