Zara Scrutinized for T-shirt Resembling Holocaust Uniform
The popular Spanish retailer, is under fire for selling a blue and white striped children’s shirt that resembled the uniform of Jewish concentration camp prisoners.
Zara stated the yellow star embossed on the left side of the T-shirt, was supposed to resemble an American sheriff’s badge. However, some figured the design was too close in resemblance to the ‘Star of David’, the star that Nazi’s forced Jewish captives to wear during the Holocaust.
The company apologized for hours Wednesday morning via Twitter to ensure offended customers that the design was not intended to resemble anything referencing the Holocaust.
“We honestly apologize, it was inspired by the sheriff’s stars from the Classic Western films and is no longer in our stores,” Zara stated in various languages via Twitter.
This is not the first time this month that Zara was under fire for offensive articles of clothing. Just over two weeks ago, a plain white T-shirt embossed with black lettering stating “White Is The New Black” surfaced the internet. Tons of customers spoke out via social media to express their thoughts on the the T-shirt and its meaning.
No need to worry, the ‘White Is The New Black” T-shirt is not for sale as of yet, and there is no word when the shirt will be released.
How do you feel about these two recent mishaps from Zara? Will they make you stop shopping at the retail giant? Chime in below.
